Points of interest

Points used in the BYOT workshop at CNG 2026 to choose where to build a small Major TOM style dataset. Pick a class, take its points, download imagery around them.

370,042 points in 41 classes, taken from Wikidata on 2026-09-17. Wikidata is CC0, and so is this file.

The User-Agent is needed: Source Cooperative rejects the default one sent by pandas.

Columns

• group, class: theme and feature type
• item: Wikidata ID, e.g. Q46420
• name: English label, sometimes empty
• country: ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code, sometimes empty

Classes

• volcanic: volcano, stratovolcano, caldera, crater, geyser
• landforms: canyon, tepui
• ice_water: glacier, glacial_lake, fjord, reservoir, lagoon, atoll
• desert: desert, dune, erg, salt_pan, oasis
• energy_industry: solar_power_plant, wind_farm, nuclear_power_plant, hydroelectric_power_station, mine, quarry, oil_field, oil_refinery, salt_evaporation_pond, landfill

Things to know

• Classes include Wikidata subclasses, so one item can show up twice. A stratovolcano is also a volcano, and mud volcanoes count as volcanoes too.
• Every feature is a single point. For big things like glaciers or deserts that point may not land on the feature.
• Only coordinates on Earth are kept. Wikidata also has craters on the Moon and Mars.
• Antarctica is left out: nothing south of 60°S.
• Points more than about 5 km from land are dropped, using Natural Earth 10 m land and minor islands. This removes offshore features, and also more than half of the atolls, which are too small for that land layer.
• Coverage is uneven. Dams, for example, are mostly in the United States. Look at country before sampling.
• mine includes underground mines you won't see from space.
